In India, as per an AISHE survey, of all the students enrolled in university education less than 1% are enrolled in PhD studies. There are less than 3% institutes in India that offer Doctoral level studies.

To address this shortcoming and to provide an opportunity for candidates to enhance their research acumen and qualifications KPGU is offering a recognized Ph.D programme in varied subjects that cover Engineering and Technology, Pharmaceutical sciences and basic Sciences.

The research scholar at KPGU is offered the right research milieu to equip him/her with the skills necessary to make a high impact on research and development in various fields. The research may range from pure to applied and conceptual. A doctorate from KPGU will prepare a research scholar in advancement in his/career and will be able to contribute to Industry, Research Institutes or the Academia at par with global expectations. A Ph.D. from KPGU provides the candidate the opportunity to enroll for Post-Doctoral studies anywhere in the world.

Eligibility criteria for admission to Ph.D programme:

The candidate aspiring admission for Ph.D. must have consistently good academic performance all through. The candidate must satisfy the below mentioned educational qualification specified as in the KPGU Ph.D. Regulations 2021 namely:

  • Master’s Degree or equivalent degree, in relevant subject / faculty, with at least 55% marks in aggregate marks or its equivalent Grade ‘B’ in the UGC 7- Point Scale (or an equivalent Grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed)
  • A relaxation of 5% of marks, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/differently-abled categories of candidates.

Admission Procedure

The admission will be based on the following

A KPGU Ph.D. Entrance Test (KPGU-PET) of 70 marks [70 multiple choice questions (MCQs) of 35 marks from Research Methodology and 35 marks of subject domain, each question carrying one mark; the duration of the test will be 90 minutes] followed by an interview. Result of an interview will be computed for 30 marks.

The candidates who secure 50% marks in entrance test and interview put together are eligible for admission.

A relaxation of 5% marks (from 50% to 45%) shall be allowed for the candidates belonging to SC/ST/SEBC (Non-Creamy layer)/Differently abled category.

Candidates qualified with M.Phil. Degree from an approved University or qualified in UGC-JRF/ UGC CSIR/NET /GATE /GPAT/ or any equivalent National Level Examination performance as accepted by UGC will be exempted from the PET but they have to appear for the interview.
  • A common merit list will be prepared for admission based on availability of seats.

Syllabus for Ph.D. Entrance Examination

The syllabus for PhD Entrance Test (PET) will be as CSIR-UGC-NET/ GATE/GPAT. In addition to the above syllabus, a total of 50% weightage will be given to research methodology questions and it will be applicable for all Ph.D. programs.

This section covers topics which test the candidate’s knowledge, understanding and aptitude for scientific analysis and reasoning.

1] Research Aptitude
– Research: Meaning, Types, and Characteristics, Positivism and Post- positivistic approach to research.
– Methods of Research: Experimental, Descriptive, Historical, Qualitative and Quantitative methods.
– Research process – Steps of research
– Thesis and Article writing: Format and styles of referencing.
– Application of ICT in research.
– Research ethics.

2] Mathematical Reasoning
– Types of reasoning.
– Number series, Letter series, Codes and Relationships.
– Mathematical Aptitude (Fraction, Time & Distance, Ratio, Proportion and Percentage, Profit and Loss, Interest and Discounting, Averages etc.).

3] Logical Reasoning
– Understanding the structure of arguments
– Evaluating and distinguishing deductive and inductive reasoning
– Verbal Analogies
– Reasoning Logical Diagram: Simple diagrammatic relationship, multi-diagrammatic relationship
– Analytical reasoning
– Venn diagrams

4] Data Interpretation
– Evaluating and distinguishing deductive and inductive reasoning
– Quantitative and Qualitative research
– Descriptive statistics – Summary measures (measures of Central tendency- measures of dispersion – graphical representation (Bar chart, Pie chart, Table chart and Line chart)

  • Fill up the form thoroughly. Incomplete forms are liable to be rejected. Please devote some time to fill up the form, do not rush.
  • Filling the form involves uploading of files viz. academic mark sheets, degree certificates, passport sized photo of applicant, applicant signature. Please prepare a single pdf file containing all scanned copies ready for uploading.
  • The applicant will also need to submit proof of payment of application fees and details of publications and Research Statement
  • A proforma of the NOC from employers (for those in a job) is shared on the webpage.
  • Proforma is not to be uploaded in the form but will be required during registration
